What Donut Land Taught Me About Community
Sometimes the most meaningful moments happen when you aren’t looking for them.
On my way to spend the day with Abbie at Crochet Kitty, I stopped at the new Donut Land in Brunswick to pick up a few dozen donuts. We were planning content, brainstorming ideas, and working on our very first Meet the Breeds event.
It was over 100 degrees outside, so there was no way I could leave Dao and Cici in the car. They stayed together in their carrier and came inside with me.
The line was long—about 45 minutes—but something incredible happened.
People smiled.
They asked questions.
They shared stories about their own cats.
Complete strangers started talking to one another.
Children lit up. Adults who had never met found themselves laughing together. Conversations that never would have happened suddenly did.
And it hit me.
This is exactly what we’ve been talking about.
For months, Abbie and I have been dreaming about creating spaces where people naturally connect—places that feel welcoming, where conversations happen organically, where education, creativity, and community all come together.
We call it a Third Space.
I expected to buy donuts.
Instead, I watched Thai cats do what they seem to do everywhere they go: bring people together.
Phoenix Legacy has never been just about breeding beautiful cats. It’s about preserving an incredible living piece of history while creating opportunities for connection, education, compassion, and community.
Sometimes all it takes is two curious cats and a box of donuts.
A huge thank you to everyone at Donut Land for your patience, kindness, and warm welcome. You probably didn’t realize you were part of something much bigger than a busy morning—but you were.
What happened that day wasn’t just a fun story.
It was proof.
Proof that people are craving genuine connection.
Proof that animals have an incredible ability to break down barriers.
Proof that community can begin almost anywhere.
If this much magic happened while waiting in line for donuts, imagine what’s possible when we intentionally create spaces designed for people to gather, learn, laugh, and connect.
This was just a glimpse.
And trust me…
You won’t want to miss what’s coming next.
